IN THIS SECTION
Dear prospective students, current students, alumni, colleagues, and
esteemed stakeholders,
On behalf of the Department of Geological Engineering at Balıkesir
University, I am pleased to welcome you to our department’s official website.
Earth sciences constitute a strategic field of study that directly affects
human life and encompasses natural resource management, environmental
protection, hazard mitigation, and engineering applications. Since its
establishment in 2003, our department has been committed to advancing
scientific knowledge, delivering high-quality education, and contributing to society
through research and professional practices. We continue to progress toward
becoming one of the leading geological engineering departments in the country.
Our primary mission is to educate geological engineers who can produce
knowledge at the national and international levels, effectively apply
scientific methods, adhere to ethical principles, and demonstrate environmental
awareness and social responsibility. Our curriculum is designed to provide
strong theoretical foundations and develop practical skills through fieldwork,
laboratory studies, and project-based learning. Students receive comprehensive
training in both the fundamental and applied areas of earth sciences, including
mineralogy, petrology, geochemistry, tectonics, hydrogeology, engineering
geology, and natural hazards.
We adopted a student-centered educational approach that encourages
critical thinking, analytical reasoning, and problem-solving skills within an
interdisciplinary framework. Through academic advising, applied coursework,
technical excursions, and internship opportunities, we aim to prepare our
students for professional life. In addition, our graduate programs offer
valuable opportunities for those wishing to pursue academic careers and
contribute to scientific research.
Research is one of the strongest pillars of our department. Our
academic staff conduct studies across a wide spectrum of topics, including
regional geology, mineral resources, petrology and geochemistry, geodynamic
processes, environmental geology, groundwater systems and geological hazards.
The results of these studies are published in national and international
scientific journals, presented at academic conferences, and shared with
industries and public institutions. Collaborative projects with governmental
agencies, local authorities, and the private sector enable the practical
application of scientific knowledge and contribute to sustainable development.
The sustainable use of natural resources and mitigation of
environmental impacts are among our fundamental responsibilities. The
scientific solutions developed within our department address critical issues
such as the exploration of energy and mineral resources, protection of water
resources, identification of geological risks, and disaster risk reduction. We
believe that geological engineers must possess not only technical competence
but also ethical awareness and a strong sense of responsibility toward society
and the environment.
Internationalization is another priority for the department. Through
exchange programs, such as Erasmus and various bilateral agreements, we
encourage both students and academic staff to engage with partner universities
abroad. Participation in international research networks, joint projects, and
academic collaborations enhances global visibility and ensures that students
receive an education aligned with international standards. These experiences
fostered intercultural competence and broadened professional perspectives.
Our vision is to become a nationally and internationally recognized,
preferred, and respected department that pursues excellence in education,
research, and professional practice in earth sciences. We aim to serve as an
innovative scientific center that develops solutions in critical areas, such as
natural resource management, analysis of geological hazards, understanding the
impacts of climate change, and engineering applications. To achieve this
vision, we continuously improve our academic staff, research infrastructure and
educational programmes.
Geological Engineering is a discipline that enables us to understand
the Earth’s past, manage its present resources, and anticipate future
challenges. Issues such as earthquakes, landslides, water scarcity, energy
demand, and environmental sustainability are directly linked to the earth
sciences. Therefore, it is of great importance that the engineers we educate
are not only technically competent but also socially responsible and globally
aware.
To prospective students considering our department, we offer an
academic environment where scientific curiosity is encouraged, hands-on
learning in natural settings is emphasized, and professional competence is
developed. Our graduates successfully serve in public institutions, the private
industry, the mining and energy sectors, engineering consultancy services, and
academia.
As the Department of Geological Engineering, we will continue to place
scientific excellence, quality education, and societal contributions at the
core of our activities. We remain committed to producing knowledge and
solutions that address the geological and environmental challenges faced by our
country and the world at large.
Thank you for your interest, and we invite you to become part of our
academic community.
Sincerely,
Head of the Department
